DIY Galvinized Tin Planter

Spring is here, and I am loooving the site of all the pretty flowers everywhere. This time of year, we spend a lot of time outside. One of my favorite things to do is sit on the front porch and watch my girls play on the lawn. Step1: Create (or import) your design

Work up a design in Silhouette Studio or import one you wish to use. If you wish to use my welcome design you can find it here. When determining the size I wanted, I measured my tin and scaled down from there. This design is roughly 9 wide by 4.5 tall.

Step 2: Cut & weed your design

For planters, I use Oracel 651. This is a outdoor grade, permanent vinyl. It should be pretty much weather resistant if left to cure before testing in in the rain. Prior to cutting, remember to check your settings, just to be safe! Also, remember to weld any parts of your design that need to be welded.

Step 3: Adhere your design to the planter

Once your design has been weeded, apply transfer tape to lift the vinyl. You will then center your design on the tin and then apply. Be sure to press firmly down to make sure it firmly adheres. Slowly lift the transfer tape, watching for any places that need to be pressed firmer.

Step 4: Drill holes in planter

Since this tin will be holding plants, it is important to drill holes in the bottom. These holes will let water out and prevent corrosion of the metal. I typically drill 6 small holes in the bottom.

Step 5: Plant your flowers

Finally, add soil, flowers and water and sit back and admire your work!

These galvanized tin planters are adorable and easy to make! They make the perfect Mother’s Day gift! Both my mom and mother in law received one last year, and they still look great!
