DIY Glitter Ornament Tutorial

I feel like Christmas always sneaks up on me.  It’s like the pool closes and then suddenly it’s Christmas Eve and you’ve forgotten gifts.

This year I’ve vowed to get the jump on Christmas.  I’m chipping away  at my gift list and have got started on my to-craft list.  Christmas will not get the jump on me this year!

This little craft is a favorite of mine because it is soooo stinking easy!  These diy glitter ornaments are done in no time at all and they look gorgeous on a Christmas tree!  You can leave them plain to match a color scheme, or you can add a vinyl decal and jazz them up a bit.  They are so versatile. They make great gifts too!

One of my favorite designs is to take these and turn them into Santa Cams.  We “send them off” to Santa (leave them in a box that disappears and comes back) to get them activated and then voila! Instate gratification.

My kids usually get back in line when reminded Santa is watching.  Just in case it helps yours too, I’ve added the free SVG to this post, so be sure to read to the end!

Step 1:  Remove the top of ornament and add Polycrylic

The ornaments have a small, flexible silver piece on top that holds the ring in place to hang it.  You will first need to remove this.

Once that’s taken off you’ll need to insert a small funnel into the opening of the ornament.  You will pour a little bit of Polycrylic into the ornament.  You don’t need much, just enough to coat it.

Once you’ve added it, gently swirl it around until the entire inside of the ornament is coated.

You likely will have a few drips left, so just stick your ornament upside down in a Solo cup and let it sit for 5-10 minutes to make sure you don’t get any clumps.

Step 2:  Add glitter

Once your cup has caught all the drips, you need to then add your glitter.  I usually just dump some glitter on a sheet of paper and then fold it in half to let it easily slid in to the ornament.  You will need a tablespoon or two of glitter to completely coat the ornament.

Once the glitter is in there you want to shake it around until your ornament is fully coated.  Once it’s coated you can shake the excess back on to your piece of paper so you can easily add the leftover glitter back into your glitter container.

I then let them dry overnight.  I just stick them in the Solo cup and let them air dry.  In the morning, I add the top piece back and am really to either hang it on the tree, or add some vinyl!

Ta-da!  They couldn’t possibly be easier, right?  And they are sooo adorably festive!!   Again, if you want to take it a step further, you can easily add a vinyl decal with cutting software.

As I mentioned earlier, one of my favorite ornaments to create is the oh-so-useful Santa Cam!  I’ve made a few for my kids (why I now use plastic bulbs) and as gifts also.  They are the perfect Christmas tree accessory!
